Why study Japanese?

The initial reason why I got interested in Japanese is that I like how Japanese looks written down and how it sounds when spoken. As I know more, I got more and more interested in the connection between Japanese language and Chinese language and how one influence each other over time. On one hand, some words look very similar but are pronounced very differently. On the other hand, some words look the same but have very different meanings. A classic is example what means daughter in Japanese means mother in Chinese.

Besides the language itself, I am also very interested in Japanese culture. Pop culture wise, I spent quite a lot of time reading manga when I am free. Moreover, I also like reading or watching documentations on the way Japanese behaves and thinks. I am particularly fascinated by the psychology of Japanese people. It is not uncommon to see skilled workers like the one depicted in "Saito: The Sushi God of Tokyo", where one could spend the whole perfecting his skill in doing one job. Even on youtube, often times, many Japanese personnels spend times on perfecting the details of their videos.

As a political satire:

what you are excited about, and/or what you found challenging after the first four weeks of Japanese class.

  1. I really like your sense of humor haha. And I wonder what kind of youtube channel you are subscribing (probably Kinoshita Yuuka san..? Cuz I really like her) I also spent so much time to read and watching Japanese anime and manga when I was young. Can't relate more about that :)

    1. I used to watch Kinoshita Yuuka's video a lot. So jealous of her being able to eat so much おいしいたべもの。

  2. I watched lots of anime broadcasted on TV when I was a kid as well. Naruto was one of my favorites.

Add to your point, Chinese characters did influence Japanese language long time ago, but in recent years, many kanzi from Japanese were imported into modern Chinese language.

One famous example is Economy, 經濟, which was originally from Japanese.

    1. Exactly! Last week in chat club, a girl who is taking fifth year Japanese showed me some 漢文(a very old type of Japanese). The articles look just like the古文we have to do back in high school.
